Apple’s move to leave Intel processors was also followed by Huawei.
Apple has confirmed that it will leave Intel’s x86-based processors, replacing their own chips with an ARM derived architecture . Similar steps will be taken by Huawei as well.
This Chinese company relies on HiSilicon as their chip designer for mobile devices such as smartphones. Namely the Kirin chipset found on Huawei cellphones.
Likewise with Apple, which brings ARM-based chips to be embedded in PCs that they design themselves. Even Huawei is all in its official form.
Quoted from GSM Arena , a prototype portrait of the Huawei MateStation B515 , a desktop computer to be used by the Chinese government , appears .
This device will be powered by an ARM-based processor, the Kunpeng 920 (D920S10). Huawei entrusted the chip fabrication designed by HiSilicon to TSMC.
Kunpeng 920 itself has been prepared for the 7nm fabrication process. And it contains four or eight cores running at 2.6 GHz. And using DDR4 2400 RAM a maximum of 64 GB.
Huawei has also prepared a motherboard for the Kunpeng 920 processor as in the photo circulating on Chinese social media, Weibo. It seems that it supports a variety of modern features.
Starting from 2 M.2 slots for SSD, 6 SATA 3.0, 1 PCIe x16, 1 PCIe 3.0 x4, and PCIe 3.0 1x. There are also 4 USB 3.0 and 4 USB 2.0, plus network ports.
According to GSM Arena, the Kunpeng 920 can be developed not only with 8 cores. It can even be up to 64 cores, and only requires 180 watts of power for that many cores.
From what is offered above, it appears that the ARM processor from Huawei is more flexible than the M1 chip used by Apple for Macs and Macbooks.
It was also reported that the Huawei MateStation B515 will be present as a desktop PC bundled with a 23.8-inch monitor. And the package of specifications provided is quite interesting.
Huawei MateStation B515 will be equipped with 8 Core CPU, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD storage, GPU R7 430, DVD driver, and all of that only requires a 180 watt power supply.
Unfortunately, it is not clear what operating system will be embedded in this Huwaei desktop PC. Given that Windows 10 for ARM is also not perfect, it is expected that it will use Linux.
Not limited to desktop PCs, Huawaei also prepared this Kunmeng processor to be embedded on the server. And promises high performance and power efficiency.
It is also not known when the Huawei MateStation B515 desktop PC with an ARM processor will go on sale, as well as the price tag.
